Q: Is there a special way I should take care of my tarot cards?
A: You can cleanse your deck in whatever method you have used for other divination tools. Some prefer to use stones, one specific element they have an affinity for, or the simple go to of smudging… smudge all the things. It is up to you and what you feel is right for your deck in how to store them. Trust your instinct and care for your tools the way you wish.
Elemental Cleansing:
- Air: Passing the deck through smoke (incense or sage are popular)
- Fire: Passing over flame
- Water: Sprinkle or mist over the deck
- Earth: Sprinkling with dirt, salt, or holding a stone of earth to the deck
Stone Cleansing and/or Charging: Place deck- wrapped or not in container with stones that call to you. Ones used often are Clear Quartz, Selenite, Smokey Quartz, Jet, Black Tourmaline, Black Onyx, and Hematite. The stones have cleansing, protection, and are good for ridding negative energy.
Moon Cleansing and/or Charging: My go to is to set things out under the full moon. The moon is great for cleansing and for me, also helps to charge my tools.
Storage: Some store their tarot decks plainly in the box that they came in, while others prefer a more elaborate method of storage. You can wrap your deck in any type of fabric; silk and velvet seem to be very popular. You can store the deck in a fabric drawstring or zip pouch, or even a wooden box. It is up to you and what you feel.
Again there is no WRONG or RIGHT way.
